Jhonen has stated that he believes his work, as well as other comics and graphic novels, shouldn't be called 'goth' comics. He believes that it stereotypes the works in the category.

Much of Jhonen's work has been influenced by Franz Kafka, H. R. Giger, and David Cronenberg. In fact, Kafka's idea of metamorphosis was used in a few episodes of Invader Zim and on occasion in his comics.

Jhonen's cartoon art often depicts gothic, misanthropic, and even satanic philosophies, though most of the spooky elements in his works are meant to be satire. His work also contains many references to animals like moose and piggies.

Though Johnny the Homicidal Maniac was considered for an Eisner Award, the judges thought that Jhonen's lettering was to hard to read. In the end, it was never nominated.
