Was it Jimi? Or was it someone later like Aerosmith or Led Zeppelin?

I wouldn't say so. Jimi Hendrix's music may have slight elements of hard rock, but he's a psichedelic musician. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were the creators of hard rock and the roots for heavy metal.

He definitely contributed to its creation, but I think Led Zeppelin was the band who created it.
