Jimmie Johnson

Jimmie Johnson Trivia

  • Trivia

    • Johnson won his first Championship at the age of 8, while riding Dirt Bikes in his backyard of El Cajon, California.

    • In 2006, Johnson finally won the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Championship, finishing 9th in the season finale at Homestead. He beat Matt Kenseth by 56 Points in the final standings.

    • He is one of only three drivers to qualify for all three "Chase for the Cup" Championships. The other two are Matt Kenseth, and Mark Martin.

    • His first win in NEXTEL Cup came at California Speedway, in Fontana California. Though Lowe's Motor Speedway is his team home track, California is his actual home track, since Bakersfield isn't too far from there.

    • He made history in his Winston Cup rookie year, by leading in points, and sweeping a track. (Both Dover races.)

    • Jimmie has only one win in the Busch Series, which came at Chicagoland Speedway in 2001.

    • Jeff Gordon IS one of Jimmie's closest friends. In fact, Gordon was Johnson's best man at his wedding to Chandra.

    • His team is notoriously known for coming back after early race issues. A prime example of this is during the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, where on lap 38, he blew a tire. After losing a lap, and making repairs, he got his lap back, and came back to win the event.

    • Johnson has placed fifth or better in every points race, since 2002.(5th in 2002, 2nd in 2003, 2 in 2004, and 5th in 2005.)

    • In 2006, Jimmie won both the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400, which are arguably the two most prestigious races on the circut. He was only the second one to ever do this.

    • Casey Mears, nephew of former Indy 500 winner, Rick Mears, is known as one of Jimmie's best friends. They both grew up in the Northern California area, and raced eachother many years, before coming to NASCAR.

    • As of August 21, 2006, Jimmie has accumulated 22 wins on the NASCAR Nextel Cup circut.

    • Jimmie won four straight races at Lowe's Motor Speedway, which is considered his "home" track. It is considered so, due to the fact that Lowe's is his primary sponsor, and Hendrick Motorsports is located about a mile away of the track.

    • His best friend is teamate, and contractual Car Owner, Jeff Gordon, who is his "mentor" of sorts.

    • Jimmie Johnson currently lives in North Carolina, with his wife Chandra and daughter Genevieve.

    • Won the 2006 Daytona 500, after starting from the back of the field due to a penalty during qualifying. His crew chief was also suspended, so Jimmie won with a backup crew chief, as well.

    • If Jimmie would have won the final race of the year at Homestead, he would have won the NEXTEL Cup Championship by 2 points.

  • Quotes

    • An excerpt of Jimmie's speech, after he won at Atlanta, the week after Hendrick Motorsports lost ten of its members in a Plane crash:

Johnson: It doesn't change anything and we don't get back our friends that we lost. But it sure makes all of us feel a little better to be able to do something like this.
