Joe Flanigan was great as John Sheppard in Stargate At, but I started to loss interest in it when it became too much about him. The show writers let his character take over the show is season 2 and after.

This is why Torri Higginson left the show at the end of season 3 and why other characters did not improve (Dr. Carson Beckett) in the series. This is why the show did not last as long as SG1, it became too much about John Sheppard and fighting the Wraith.

Many fans would agree as the show started to loss rating after Torri Higginson departed.

By season 4 not even Amanda Tapping and Richard Picardo jointing the show could save it and why they made a deal with Sifi channel to bring the show to an end, when Sifi was just going to cancel it after season 4.

Another show that did the same thing was Star Trek Voyager once Jeri Ryan jointed as Seven of Nine (a Borg drone) the show quickly became too much about her in seasons 5 and 6 almost all of the episodes was about her and the Borg.

I find the character John Sheppard to be quite interesting, and watch the show to see where this particular member of the team is going, it seems that a great deal of the man's appeal to most fans of Atlantis is his appearance. He isn't as talented as David, although what interviews I have seen would make him out to be very deticated to his work, I still feel that this character is a bit lacking, and Joe isn't helping that any. He could do so much better. His best scenes are when he is with David, and I feel that David is the one that carries these scenes, not Joe.
  • The new Richard Dean Anderson?!

At the first few times I saw him, I was not really to thrilled with him.

But I gave him another chance you might say, I might have compared him too much to our ol`trusted Richard Dean Anderson, he then showed his good timing and humour, much like Richard Dean Anderson.

There is a few times when he can be a little static and repetitive but it seems to work well in Stargate as a military person and with that humour.

He will most likely be a star in several more sci-fi shows over the time, cant wait for new episodes.

But I like Ben Browder more :)
  • I loooooove this man: talented, cute, intelligent and has humour. Mr. Perfect... only: he has a wife...

I´ve seen him the first time Stargate Atlantis, of course. Sitting down on that chair and it begins...

I´ve watched the Women´s murder club episodes with Joe as a detective, and his appearance many years ago in "Family Album" where he played a young gay man abandoned by his family. Played a bad and totally psychotic "superhero" in "Birds of prey" and a killer and women-basher in CSI Miami, both times showing he can not only be the good-looking soldier.

I´m sorry, that I didn´t get to see "First monday" starring John as a lawyer, hope I´ll get to see it some day. Hope we´ll such more of him.

Joe Flanigan (born January 5, 1967) is an American television actor best known as Major/Lt. Colonel John Sheppard in Stargate Atlantis.

Flanigan was born Joseph Dunnigan III in Los Angeles, California. His name was changed to Joseph Flanigan after he was adopted by his stepfather, John Flanigan. He has three brothers and four sisters. When he was six years old, his family moved to a small ranch near Reno, Nevada, although his stepfather objected to his ranch being called a "small" farm. Joe responds, "The trouble is, it is a small farm." However it is a somewhat coy mischaracterization of his stepfather who was a vice president at the family business, Anheuser Busch.

From the age of 14 Flanigan attended a boarding school in Ojai, California where he appeared in the school's production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He later earned a history degree at the University of Colorado where he was a world-class skier and appeared in Coriolanus. He took acting to overcome his shyness and never planned on an acting career. He spent a year studying at the Sorbonne in Paris as part of the Junior Year Abroad program and is fluent enough to joke around with French reporters in French.

Joe is a handsome person. He is cute and awsome. He is a good character and that is what i like about him. You are funny, i really laugh when you say something on the seasons like, McKay: We need to greet them?

Cornol Cardwell: How are we going to do that?

Sheppard: Stop them, make them scroll down there window

I love that part, i laughed so hard. You are very awsome what you do for your job, he is serious but funny at the same time. You are also funny on one of your jokes called, How do you get your hair to stick up like that?

Joe Flanigan is an extremely talented actor who has truly met his stride on the hit SciFi show Stargate Atlantis. He has showed his acting prowess through the unique character of John Sheppard on the show. Prior to Stargate Atlantis he starred in several series in guest or recurring shows such as Tru Calling, Profiler, Birds of Prey, First Monday, Cupid, and others. He is the perfect actor to portray John Sheppard, and I can picture no one else in his place. His ability to shift between a playful and joking manner into a serious soldier is a talent, and he portrays a military leader with skill and poise. You wouldn't think he would be able to play a soldier, but he wears the part well, even with a mussed up hair-do typically not seen in the military (by the way, can't picture it any other way). His versatile acting style has made him one of my favorite television actors, and I never miss an episode of a show he participates in.

Joe Flanigan is an Excellent actor.

I am a Stargate Altnatis fan. Part of the reason that I watch Stargate Atlantis is because of him. He is an awesome actor, very talented and personally very good looking.

He is the lead man of Stargate Atlantis and does an excellent job, his potrays his character very well. Every time I watch Atlantis I actually believe him, he is awesome and very talanted. I have seen him in Thought Crimes and he did a great job. Joe Flanigan is a great guy and also a great actor. Can't wai to se more of him!

Joe Flanigan is an overall ok actor. His main role, Colonel John Shepard from Stargate Atlantis, is played very well. He impersonates the character well and really brings the character alive. It must be a hard part because he has to act with so many blue screens and amateur actors, but he does it well. Overall, however, he is not an overwhelmingly awesome actor, but he's getting better. Joe Flanigan is charming and absolutely adorable. He really is quite handsom and good looking. Again, he plays Colonel John Shepard very well and I would like to see him in more roles.

My favorite show is Stargate Atlantis for two main reasons. Many reasons, but only two MAIN ones. The first reason is the plots, and the second one is...Joe Flanigan. He brings life and humor to the role. He really fits in, and he has a very positive attitude in the show, and he's also pretty handsome. I don't think Stargate Atlantis would be the same without him. No one could fill a role like that like he can. He strikes you as nice, funny, but still authoritative. I haven't seen any other movies or shows that he is in but after watching him in Stargate Atlantis I definitely want to. Joe Flanigan is a superb actor, and I'm really glad that he is signed on for another season of Stargate Atlantis.

I've seen him in other series, but didnt really notice him until he apeared in Stargate:Atlantis. In this series he's great. I dont think many other actors would have pulled this off quite as sucessfully as he does. Hes witty, charming and surely, he IS hansome. I hope his show will be running for a long time, and that he doesnt leave it.
  • "First Monday"'s loss is "Stargate: Atlantis"'s gain!

    9.6
    "Superb"
First time I remember seeing Joe Flanigan was on the short lived series "First Monday". I very much enjoyed that show as it was from the creators of JAG (another favorite of mine at the time). Sadly, not enough people enjoyed it as well and "First Monday" went the way of the Dodo. But as the saying goes "When one door closes, somewhere a window opens". As disappointed as I was that "First Monday" kicked the bucket, I can't be all that upset because two of it's characters moved on to other shows that I enjoyed more (one that still didn't last, the other that seems to have taken off quite nicely).

One of those shows - the one that seems to be surviving - is Stargate: Atlantis and one of it's stars Joe Flanigan. As much as I loved "First Monday" I must say I'm glad it was cancelled because otherwise I don't think Joe Flanigan would have gotten the attention he deserved with his new role as Lt. Colonel John Sheppard.

But I'm glad he had a shot at both shows because it gave me the chance to see him play two very different characters. On SGA the handsome, courageous and humorous hero. On First Monday, the slimy butt kissing weasle (but still a hottie). :D

Here's hoping that SGA lasts as long as SG-1 because Joe Flanigan and the entire cast are just such a treat to watch every week.

However, I'm not used to this long midseason hiatus that cable does so it's going to be a long three months until January. ;)
