John was the headliner at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, the night the club experienced the third deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. Tragically, 165 people died in the fire, which took place on May 28, 1977.
John graduated from Ohio's Denison University in 1963 with a degree in Theater Arts.
John had a brief modeling career in New York while attending high school in nearby White Plains.
Both of John's parents were ordained ministers in the American Baptist Church.
John and his wife, Rhonda, both game lovers, developed a game in 1989 that is based on geography. The game is sold today as Borderline USA. There are also versions based on Europe/Middle East, Africa and a World version. The games aim to teach children about geography in a fun way.
John has three children: John Jr. (with Jackie Miller), a business coach; Jennifer (with Jackie Miller), an ice skater; and Ashleigh (with Rhonda Rivera), a music conservatory student who would like to follow in her father's footsteps with a career in musical theater.
John married singer Rhonda Rivera in 1983. She had been one of his backup singers in his stage act.
John was married to Jackie Miller from 1969 to 1982.
