He was a light leading man for the early 50s, a cheerful sort of fellow with an appealing quality of ordinariness. He had noticeable supporting parts in films like "Whiskey Galore!" and "Treasure Island", a rather larger one as the young squire in "The Titfield Thunderbolt", and he had a success in a now-forgotten film about coal-miners trapped underground, "The Brave Don't Cry". A light comedy followed - "Genevieve", which nobody expected to make any money, but which instead became a huge hit and one of the beloved classics of 50s British cinema. Gregson was now a star, of sorts; but theMore remainder of his 1950s films are mostly pretty dull, the only notable one being "The Battle Of The River Plate", for Powell and Pressburger. In the 1960s, his position was slipping noticeably, although he remained an effective actor. He took to TV work, starring in "Gideon's Way" as a shrewd copper, but relegated to a tedious supporting role in "Shirley's World", as Shirley Maclaine's long-suffering boss. He was only 55 when a heart attack killed him.
