John was born in Shelf, West Yorkshire in 1934.
John attended Rishworth School, and trained for the RAF and BOAC, before turning to acting.
In 1965 he joined flagship BBC Children's programme, Blue Peter, becoming one of the show's most iconic figures, as well as its longest-serving presenter.
John and his wife's first attempt to sail the world in 1982 ended in hurricane, but they tried again in 1984, settling in Majorca.
