John was charged for pitch invasion at an Australian cricket match when he tried to tempt Shane Warne into having a cigarette. At the time Shane Warne was under contract for a nicotine patch company. To do this, John released a remote control seagull, with a cigarette dangling from its mouth, onto the MCG during a match. The police charged him and sent him off to the Melbourne Magistrate's Court. The case was dismissed.

After the qualifying final for the 2006 Soccer World Cup, John Safran received scores of emails thanking him for Australia's win over Uraguay. The story being that in 1970, the Australian team hired a local Witch Doctor to help them defeat the Rhodesian team in the World Cup qualifying match. After they refused to pay him for his services the Witch Doctor cursed them and for over 30 years Australia played poorly in all World Cup matches. In his 2003 TV series 'John Safran VS God', John traveled to Mozambique to lift the curse and appease the spirit of the Witch Doctor.

When he was in high school, John formed a hip-hop group named Raspberry Cordial with his mate Chris Lumsden. Their debut album 'Melbourne Tram' received high rotation on Melbourne community radio.
