During the Cuban Revolution, Johnny was playing golf with friends when Castro's soldiers surrounded them. Thinking fast, he gave the Tarzan yell and the soldiers escorted them to a safe area, delighted to have met Tarzan.

Johnny said his famous Tarzan yell came from splicing and mixing together the sounds of a hog caller, a soprano, and alto singers.
