1. Don't ever use someone's song if that someone is in the room.
2. Don't beg.
3. Don't leave your audition if it's going badly, and if you do, don't come back.
4. Don't forget the lyrics.
5. Don't give lame excuses for your voice giving out.
6. Don't wear costumes.
7. Don't call yourself a crack baby on national television.
8. Don't do impersonations, especially of animals and especially if you're a girl.
9. Do keep your day job.
Jon: My heart wasn't into being a ballad singer or creating a teenybopper image. I've always felt more comfortable with a rock edge to my music and I wanted to develop that sound.
Jon: (On making his first CD without American Idol's help) The offers and musical direction being handed to me just didn't feel right.
Jon: (On looks on "American Idol") Cuteness goes a long way on Idol, I mean, we're not really there for the music.
