Jonathan was born in Toronto, Canada and is the son of actors Sara Botsford and Alan Scarfe. Jonathan apprenticed at the Stratford Film Festival in Canada before being cast in a number of guest roles on television and in film.
In 2001, Jonathan wrote and co-directed the short film "Speak" with his wife, actress Suki Kaiser. Kaiser and Scarfe, who have been married since 1998, share two children.
