    • Conrad's father, Count Apollo Nalecz Korzeniowski, was a hard-up aristocrat, a writer of patriotic tragedies and also a translator and poet. After the Polish rebellion against the Russian Empire in 1863, Apollo was arrested in Warsaw and exiled to Siberia. He died of tuberculosis in 1869, when Conrad was eleven.
