Her father, Joe, a labor union president, and her mother, Esther, a homemaker, eventually moved to Berlin, New Jersey, where Kelly grew up with younger sister, Linda, now a children's book author.

She was discovered by her current manager, Cathy Parker, while acting in her high school senior play, The Ugly Duckling.

When she appeared on the celebrity version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Ripa won $250,000 for the Children's Tomorrow Fund, an organization that helps children with cancer and blood disorders.
