I remembered seeing him as "Butler" in "Open Range" and his performance stuck with me enough to recognize him again in "Sons of Anarchy." I think Coates has really hit his stride in his portrayal of Alex "Tig" Trager, a character that has some vile traits. But the way Coates portrays "Tig" it leaves you with a smile, sometimes in the way you know you shouldn't look at a car accident, but you do anyway, and other times he makes you laugh right along with the character. Coates has successfully been able to reach out beyond the usual "yuck" of playing this bad guy and make you want to cheer him onto his next horrible atrocity.
Kim Coates' soulful and very believable portrayal of the Rossilini character in "Sabotage" is what started me off as a fan of this actor. When I first saw this episode, it was the story and character that really stuck with me but then I was soon curious to know who the actor was behind the Rossilini character. I felt a tremendous burden for him despite the fact that his terrible experiences led him to commit equally awful crimes. Some of my respect for Kim is his decision to take on the role of Rossilini and the wonderful way in which he did.
I was delighted to discover that Kim is Canadian-born and am now very much interested in seeing some of his roles in other movies and shows. So far I've watched him in Open Range and Silent Hill and am eager to see more.
Kim Coates is from Saskatoon, Canada and became interested in acting after picking it up by chance never had taken in highschool.
He has been in a number of well known movies such as Black Hawk Down, Pearl Habour and The Client. Kim usually is cast as the bad guy or a guy who is a little crazy.
Kim is an amazing actor and deserves to be given more chances.
