LASH grew up in Lousiana. His father was a real estate salesman and he was also a traveling hotel representative. He was mostly raised by his mother. ST. JOHN'S MILITARY ACADEMY in Los Angeles provided his high school education. He attended the COLLEGE of the PACIFIC with the intent to study law. He then studied drama to help correct a speech impediment.
He was known as the "KING OF THE BULLWHIP." Producer/Director/Writer BOB TANSEY considered LASH as the CHEYENNE KID character in the movie SONG OF OLD WYOMING. When asked if he could handle a bullwhip, LASH said he could,
… More although he never had used one. He rented some bullwhips and practiced, but never could get the hang of it. The studio hired SNOWY BAKER, an expert with the bullwhip, to give him lessons.
He played alongside EDDIE DEAN in a few movies before each one became stars of their own shows. He played a character by the name of CHEYENNE DAVIS in several movies and then went with the name "LASH." He actually changed his name to LASH because he said he never liked the name AL. Eventually, he acquired a side kick played by AL ST. JOHN who played the character FUZZY Q. JONES. LASH did his own fight scenes because as he put it, "they were too cheap to hire doubles." He always made sure his hat fell off during the fight scenes so that people could see it was him and not a stunt double.
He made less than 40 movies and never reached the success that a lot of Western Stars did. Nevertheless, he made some good pictures. He spent the latter days of his life as a traveling evangelist preaching the Gospel.
