A native of Cuba, Puig moved to the United States with his family when he was six years old. At the age of 12, family members watched Puig run off the bank of a gator-infested lake in pursuit of a five-foot alligator. It wasn't long before Puig was catching and releasing large alligators on a regular basis, and by the time he turned 18 he had already had his first encounter with a shark.
By the age of 25, after moving to the Florida Keys, he had begun a modest career as a commercial spearfisherman. It was during this time that he met Mark Rackley, a fellow spearfisherman and self-taught wildlife cameraman. After working together for a few years, they began to switch their focus from spearfishing to capturing Puig's amazing encounters with wild animals, both on video and in still images.
