Melina Mercouri was a Greek actress and politician. Her family was a family of politicians. Her grandfather, Spyridon Mercouris, was the mayor of Athens for many years and her father, Stamatis Mercouris used to be a member of the Greek parliament. She was a Minister of Culture in all of the cabinets of the Greek Socialist Party (PASOK) from 1981-1989 and 1993-1994.
She studied theater at the Royal Drama School (1943 - 1946). Her first appearance was in 1944. In 1965 she got married to American director Jules Dassin. She was passionate about the return of the Parthenon Marbles from the

Melina died from lung cancer in 1994 in a New York hospital. Her body was returned to Athens and she received a state funeral with honors equivalent to the ones of a Prime Minister.
