Metallica: My affiliation with Metallica began the time Exodus played with Metallica. I talked to Lars and James briefly, in passing. They were planning to go to New York to hook up with Johnny Z and do their first album. They had been having problems with Dave, and they were looking for someone who was more a melodic, controlled player. Our soundman played them some tapes of Exodus live, and they liked what they heard. They gave me call in April 1983 and asked me if I wanted to join Metallica. I thought it was an April Fools' joke, but I said 'sure' anyway.
