Michael: My dream would have been to play for the Vancouver Canucks and beat the crap out of the Rangers team for the Stanley Cup, I missed it by that much, and now I'm playing [a concert] here. I would have preferred 41 games a season, but I'll take one night.

Michael: I think I was annoyed going through the '90s just as a guy who loves music. There wasn't a lot of music for me. Everything was groove driven. We lost the plot with the melody. There's no more melody. ... Now we are starting to hear the melody come back and have young people reintroduced to it.

Michael: I had done an interview with 'Hello' magazine. In it, they asked me if I was going to marry Emily Blunt. Of course, what was I going to say? I said, 'Oh yeah I am going to marry her and I love her and all of this stuff.' It's true. I was making a joke. They said to me, 'Have you asked her?' I said, 'Have I? Maybe I am asking her through the magazine.' Me being dry, I realize now I can't even joke about stuff because they've used it to sell their magazine. They have taken it completely out of context

Michael: Maybe those people haven't had the family I've had. The money never mattered. I'm not kidding you. It hasn't really brought me any kind of happiness. Maybe a little more comfort – not having to worry about my future and my family's future. I guess that's a bigger deal than I make it out to be. But I don't have anything really fancy.

Michael: Other artists, they write 13 songs and hopefully one or two of them are successful singles. And the other 11, for the most part, are filler. And I think people have grown tired of spending £15 for the two singles they like, so they download them. And everyone bitches about downloading but a lot of artists put out s--t. And I think part of the reason I'm so fortunate is that I get to cover some of the greatest songs of all time. So there's quality.'

Michael: I don't just want to cover a song because it's easy, like 'Fly Me to the Moon.' I like that song. It's a great song. But I don't want to cover it just because it's one of the most popular standards. I wanted to take chances and record songs that I thought I could breathe new life into.

Michael: I am a candid interview and I have a dark and dry sense of humor - a very Canadian sense of humor and I am only learning now stupidly that you can't read tongue. When I say something funny in a newspaper and I meant it to be funny, it doesn't read that way.

Michael: It offends me when people think I only listen to Frank Sinatra. I was born in 1975 and I never wanted to be part of the Rat Pack. As a kid, my biggest idol was Michael Jackson. As a teenager, I wanted to be one of the Beastie Boys.

Michael: When I did my first album, I was marketed as the singer who would appeal to your grandma. But as each record arrived with more power and confidence, I began to sound younger and younger.

Michael: (following his break up with Emily Blunt) I'll go home and I'll curl up in a ball and I'll cry. I'm not kidding. I'll just cry. Emily was a substantial person and amazing still. Top girl. Top class.

Michael: My story has been pretty neat. To be honest with you, I grew up in a wonderful place in a wonderful country. My family gave me unconditional love as I grew up. Middle class, work hard, blue collar family. I have never had anything terrible happen in my life. God blessed me with having a healthy family and good people around me. I feel in love with this music. Besides the fact of being discovered by the Prime Minister, David Foster and Paul Anka the story is not all that exciting. I wish there was a little bit more drama.

Michael: Jazz music is like a good blues band that has fallen down the stairs.

Michael: You can try to trick the people and come out wearing a fedora and a tuxedo but that's not me. I was born in the late '70s, I wear jeans. I don't hang out in casinos. The lifestyle isn't my thing. I don't drink martinis and I don't smoke cigars.

Michael: My grandfather was really my best friend growing up. He was the one who opened me up to a whole world of music that seemed to have been passed over by my generation. Although I like rock & roll and modern music, the first time my granddad played me the Mills Brothers, something magical happened. The lyrics were so romantic, so real... the way a song should be for me. It was like seeing my future flash before me. I wanted to be a singer and I knew that this was the music that I wanted to sing.
