Michael Nyqvist is a Swedish actor who was born Rolf Ake Mikael Nyqvist on November 8, 1960, in Stockholm, Sweden. He spent the first year of his life in a Swedish orphanage, before being adopted by a married couple. When Nyqvist was 17 years old, he visited Omaha, Nebraska, for one year as a foreign exchange student. It was here that Nyqvist first became interested in acting, after performing in a high school production. Back in Sweden, Nyqvist was accepted to the Swedish Academic School of Drama in Malmo at the age of 19. He later graduated from the academy and began acting. His first major role was in 1997, when he began playing the police officer Banck in the first series of Beck Films. However, Nyqvist is best known for his role of Rolf, an alcoholic, abusive husband in the European film Together. For his role in this movie, Nyqvist was nominated for a Guldbaggage Nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and won the award for Best Supporting Actor and the Gijon International Film Festival.
