Murray Hamilton was an American actor who is best known for his roles in The Graduate (1967) and Jaws (1975). Born in Washington, North Carolina in 1923, Hamilton expressed interest in acting during his high school years. After being turned down by the US Army due to bad hearing, he moved to New York to begin his career as a stage actor. His big break came in 1955 when he guest-starred on the NBC drama Justice. From there, he appeared on a number of his television shows including The Twilight Zone, Perry Mason and The Fugitive. His film career was marked by several famous supporting roles including his role as Mr. Robinson in The Graduate and as Amity Island mayor Larry Vaughn in Jaws and its subsequent sequel. He also appeared in Anatomy of a Murder (1958) with Jimmy Stewart and The Hustler (1961) with Paul Neman. Murray Hamilton passed away from cancer in 1986, mere months before he was scheduled to reprise his role as Mayor Larry Vaugn in Jaws IV: The Revenge.
