Nat King Cole was by far my favorite music artist of all time. There are so many reasons on why I think he is a once in a lifetime person. He had one of the most distinct and unique voices of any musician. When his music plays on the radio or on a cd player, you know who is at work. That smooth, calming voice is what makes his music gold and it adds so much to the lyrics to any of his songs. Another reason why I have so much respect and admiration for him is that he thrived in a time where Afircan-Americans had trouble making a living. He was one of the very few black artists to be musically accepted by most whites. He even had his own televison show and had some success with it. His music and importance to the culture of music is undefinable. He truly was a once in a life time performer and there will never be anyone like him. Thank you Nat.
One of the greatest voices of the 20th century, Nat King Cole also found fame and acclaim as a jazz pianist. Cole made the transition from playing to singing effortlessly and stayed with both throughout his long career. Despite having a short life, tragically cut short by lung cancer, he has left behind a body of work that is still enjoyed today. He has so many signature songs and his rich, velvety voice identifies him instantly - "Mona Lisa," "Unforgettable," "Straighten Up and Fly Right," and so many others. On a larger and more important scale, Cole also made great strides for civil rights, becoming one of the most popular African-American performers of the day and campaigning for civil rights with JFK and Lyndon Johnson. His catalogue of work may not be as deep as Sinatra or Martin, but he has left his mark as one of the best crooners of all time.
