Nigel injured his back in a crash during practice for the 1993 Phoenix Indy car race, when his car was punctured against the outside concrete retaining wall of the track. Desperate to return ASAP, he had needles drain litres of fluid from his back in between practice sessions for the following race. He won the race and later, the championship.
The Nigel Mansell World Of Racing, a museum named after him, is located in Woodbury, Devon. The museum contains memorabilia and historical Formula One cars.
