Paul came to blows with driver Alex Tagliani at the 2006 San Jose Champ Car race. Paul had missed a right curve and went straight into an open space area. By trying to return to the track, he hit Alex Tagliani's car, damaging the whole front of it. After the crash, Tagliani, angrily confronted him in the pits and demanded that he pay for the damage since Tagliani's race team had financial issues. Tracy then warned Tagliani not to touch him, but the latter persisted and eventually the two men came to blows before being separated by Champ Car officials. Paul noted that Tagliani was still wearing his helmet during the scuffle. Both men were fined an undisclosed amount of money, while Paul was put on probation for three races and lost seven points.
In October 2006, Paul fractured his right scapula in a golf-cart incident. Paul had a little too much to drink and ended up with the golf-cart on top of him.
In 2003 Paul became the first driver in 32 years to win the first three races of a season, scoring victories in St. Petersburg, Monterey and Long Beach after earning front-row starts in all three races.
Paul: (on fracturing his scapula in a golf-cart incident) Sorry to say it was self-inflicted. I was at a party and had a little too much to drink, and we thought it was a good idea to go out on a golf cart and try and jump some sand dunes with it. You don't have to tell me, it was dumb.
It hurts pretty bad, but I'm getting some treatment and I think I'll be able to qualify and at least start the race. If I can get my motion back I should be alright.
Paul: I don't go out and tell people what I have done in my career. I'm aware of how long I have been in the sport and how many races I have won, but it is nothing for me to show off about. People either love me or hate me. I just want to be remembered as a tough racer who has been consistent year in and year out for 15 years, which isn't easy to do.
