Singer-songwriter-composer, Peter Allen began his career with his brothers in the popular Australian television act "The Allen Brothers" in the early 1960's. Discovered by Judy Garland, he returned to the US and performed with her. He met and married Judy's daughter Liza Minnelli in 1967. Their marriage ended in 1972.
He achieved success by writing songs that other performers recorded such as "Don't Cry Out Loud" sung by Melissa Manchester and "I Honestly Love You" sung by Olivia Newton-John. In 1977 after the release of his album "Taught By Experts" his songs "I Go To Rio"
… More amd "The More I See You" brought him much success. He went on to compose music for soundtracks made for Motion Pictures. He co-wrote the song "Arthur's Theme" (sometimes also called "The Best That You Can Do") with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager and Christopher Cross, for the movie Arthur (1980), which won them an Academy Award for Best Song.
His songs to this day pop up in various movies and television commercials. After his death one of those songs "I Still Call Australia Home" became very popular. In 1998, a musical based on his life, titled "The Boy From Oz" opened in Australia. This successful show was then brought to the US in 2003 and on Broadway, Hugh Jackman played the role of Peter Allen and won a Tony Award for this portrayal.
