Peter Berner

Birth Name

Peter Berner is a very funny and cynical man. He hosts his own satirical series, BackBerner, where he repeatedly makes fun of all political parties and the government.

No-one is spared under the glare of Berner's razor sharp and insightful approach to News and Current Affairs. BackBerner adopts a newsroom format with a smartly dressed Berner as anchor. Berner takes viewers behind the headlines to make them think about current issues and he doesn't hesitate in taking aim at big business, marketing gurus, foreign governments and politicians.

Working as a stand-up comic since 1988, before BackBerner, the gifted comedian spent over a decade beating the boards of all the major Australian comedy venues.

In 1997 and 1998 Berner was a writer and performer on The Andrew Denton Breakfast Show. During December 1997 he performed in New York at the Boston Comedy Club, where critics begged him to stay in town.

Berner let his inimitable loose in a sell out tour of New Zealand in 1998, followed by an appearance in London during September at the prestigious Jongleurs Comedy Club where he was greeted with critical, industry and public praise.

He has written and performed shows including "Lonely Guys" and "Rant" which received rave reviews during the 1997 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. In March 1999 he premiered his latest comic creation "Disturbed" which played to packed houses at The Harold Park Hotel in Sydney then travelled to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival where it was regarded as a "must see" event amongst the 300 plus shows on offer.

Was regularly on GNW and GNW Night Lite but since he started his own show, he hasn't been on it often. This was because Berner's show was filmed the same day as GNW Night Lite (and partly because it hasn't been filmed for the first few weeks of Berner's show). Plus, Berner lived in Melbourne because that's where his show was filmed. In 2000 he moved back to Sydney to film his show there instead.

BackBerner originally aired on Thursday nights at 9p.m. but then moved to Monday nights. The first show aired on the 19th of August 1999, the last one ended with Season 3 on the 14th November 2002.

Berner has been a comedian for a while now and he parents didn't take kindly to the idea originally because all of his brothers are lawyers.

Berner was a guest on Rove where he revealed he likes talking with a pipe because it makes him sound more intelligent.

One stand up show he has done is "The Big Questions" which is also done with James O'Loghlin. More information about that on his page.

Berner's regular appearances on Good News Week meant that he became a favourite for its audience to see and this allowed him to appear on the final GNW ever.
