One of British television's busiest and most distinguished actors, unforgettable in such roles as the silent arsonist in "The Fire Raisers", the dogged police inspector in "The Gold Robbers", the long-term prisoner and "Mr. Big" of Slade Prison in "Porridge" and as the kindly old man slipping slowly into Alzheimer's Disease in "Our Friends In The North". In films, he has given fine performances opposite Dustin Hoffman (in "Straw Dogs"), Frank Sinatra (in "The Naked Runner"), Paul Newman (in "The Mackintosh Man") and Anthony Hopkins (inMore "The Remains Of The Day"). Busy well into his eighties.
