  • Funny but serious

His Detective role is grrrrrrreat. I like that he brings some flair to the show with humor... it's hard to incorporate that in such a serious show, but his role playing does it well. His presence makes the show complete. He is unique to the acting world because he can switch from funny to serious in a few seconds and the outcome would still come off great. His looks add the perfect touch too.
  • No talent azz klown. Gestapo like mind set. Holier-than-thou. One character to his credit. Why does he think he's so great? He's never been funny.

This guy does one character that he pawns off all over the place. He was never funny as a stand up . . . like an un-funny version of Lewis Black. He hangs out with the likes of Bill Maher to make himself feel better than the rest of us true Americans. He rips the military, but neglects our military's involvement in WWII.

Apparently he feels it is okay to stifle free speech - he alluded that it is "illegal" to make fun of any ethnicities other than your own. Wow, comedy just went down the drain.

He claims to be friends with George Carlin (RIP), Richard Pryor, and other comedy greats, but they'll tell you that the 1st Amendment is what lets them live. Belzer would steal it away from you. He also had the audacity to question the nature of another comedian's work. That is a huge no-no.

Belzer, do us all a favor and stay in your little make believe world where you're a cop, everybody else is less important than you, and you can sit at home with your prosthetic testicle and your stupid little dog and be a brittle bitter little man.

Arrogant, Ignorant, Unimportant, Unintelligent, Insignificant, No Talent Azz Klown with no respectable body of work. Get a life . . . woah, too late, you're already 60-something. THe next Larry King . . . except not as funny.
  • How do you not love this guy?

I was surprised to see such a low rating for "Detective Munch." How can you not love this guy? With his strong opinions on everything, his ability to talk non-stop, his conspiracy theories? The guy's a riot. He's the ideal combination of hard and soft, funny and serious, intelligent and goofy. I absolutely love this character. He is the perfect addition to the SUV group. Can't imagine the show w/o him!!! He adds just the right touch to this series. I think he is able to play a better part here than he did on Homicide: Life on the Street, even though he played the same character there.
  • A hilarious man that needs to recieve more credit for his role as John Munch.

Richard Belzer is an amazing actor and comedian that has starred in many different shows and movies. WHo could forget the role he played in Scarface? He has been playing the character Detective John Munch since his days of Homicide: Life on the Streets and now we get to see his amazing acting in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. I believe his character is being under used in the series and I miss the days from the first few seasons when he would show up more often. I think the fact that a comdedian plays a detective in a crime show is hilarious, and I love his little rants about conspiracy theories! I you want to laugh after a bad day, turn on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and watch all of the scenes with Richard in them. He delivers the script expertley and I believe he should recieve several awards for his fabulous acting!
  • Great actor and great character. It seems that SVU doesn't really know what they have, and if they do, they're choosing not to use it, which is sad. I'd like to see more of Munch as the detective he's supposed to be, not the one who runs the squad errands

Definitely one of my favorite actors...and Det. Sgt. Munch is definitely one of the best characters on SVU. I really don't think SVU knows what they have. I find it sad that the show has been using Richard Belzer less and less as the series goes on, to the point where the Munch character has pretty much been reduced to running the squad's errands. That's kind of pathetic, seeing that Richard Belzer is a good actor in his own right, having already shown this in a seven-season run with Homicide: Life on the Street. For that matter, I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of H:LOTS fans who only crossed over to SVU once H:LOTS was canceled just because Richard Belzer agreed to come back and reprise the role of Munch. I feel that Richard Belzer has more than proven himself as an actor, and that he is very much underused on SVU. He has done great work on this show, on H:LOTS, and on various other shows that he's appeared in over the years. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that TPTB of SVU keep their promise and give the viewers more of Munch this year, because over the past few seasons, Richard Belzer's presence on the show has been missed.
  • Belz is the real top talent in L&O:SVU, with Munch being my favorite character in *all* the shows he's been on. Belz's talents are many and varied (comedian, actor, writer, talk show host, etc) and he's exceptional at all of them.

You haven't really seen the Law & Order franchise until you've seen Richard Belzer in action as John Munch on the "SVU" flavor of this franchise. Witty, acerbic and brilliant, Belz's long-honed portrayal of Munch is a highlight of the show and a great counterpoint to all the Elliot/Olivia over-played dramatic near-romance. John Munch is a TV icon, having appeared on no less than 10 shows, from the critically-acclaimed "Homicide: Life on the Street" to "Arrested Development" and too many others to name. (The jury's still out on whether or not Belz was in character when he appeared on "Sesame Street" to tell us that L is for LAZY. It's also for LOL, which sums up his schtick for that show.)

Next time you're in the mood for something darker, catch the SVU episodes "Painless" and "Parts," both of which show Belz's depth for drama. It's a couple hours of your life well spent.
  • A great actor, but it seems SVU doesn't know how to use him properly. His character, Sergeant John Munch, has so much potential!

One of my favorite actors and comedians and best character of SVU. Who cares if he's not the lead actor on SVU. He brought the Homicide fans over to SVU (some 5-7 million fans) and without him, SVU wouldn't exist today because it had so much troubles taking off in the first two seasons.

Munch has so much potential and it's sad that he is reduced to running errands for the squad.

People are always for the looks, so I guess that's why we see Benson and Stabler all the time. John Munch/Richard Belzer maybe old, but he is still has a handsome mug in his own way and can carry a show of his own. He carried Homicide and SVU before Benson and Stabler took over. If Benson and Stabler were old and didn't look like themselves as they do now, would you still like them as the lead characters? I bet if you saw how Richard look in the old days, these silly demented E/O shippers would change their minds.

We judge so much by looks and never by inner characteristics anymore, like the heart, realizing full potential, the will to succeed, etc. I'm not saying Mariska Hargitay/Olivia Benson or Christopher Meloni/Elliot Stabler don't have these characteristics, I'm saying it's more apparent in Richard Belzer/John Munch because the writers have hardly explored his character unlike with Benson and Stabler.
  • Jokester!!

Richard Belzer is hilarious! He is a joy to watch on TV and in movies. I really like him on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. On the show, Belzer plays detective John Munch, a detective who investigates sexual crimes in New York City. ON the show, he is always making jokes about random things. He doesn't trust anyone or anything, especially the government. He adds a certain comedic aspect to the show. The humor, though, is very tasteful, by this I mean he doesn't make fun of people ina mean way its more of teasing really. In conclusion, just wanted to say, Belzer is the man!!
  • He does some awesome stuff.

I think that for one character to go from one show to another and be in so many shows, you have to be very talented. He started in Homicide: Life on the Street and is now in Law&Order: SVU. I remember first seeing and episode of the X-Files he was in, as John Munch and I thought it was the coolest thing ever, well almost. The funny thing was the guy he was interviewing was named after JFK, and Munch is a paranoid guy. Although in SVU he is not one of the main characters he in necessary for the show to go on, and I like how in the new episodes Munch enters from the side with something he has found out.

He has been a personel favorite of mine since he started on SVU. Even though he isn't one of the title roles I think he brings a lot to the show and brings a brand of dry humor that needs a place on such a serious show. He defenitely has a great on screen prescence with all the other actors on the show as well. The glasses and hat are such a nice touch, too.
  • The character Richard Belzer created in Homicide: Life on The Street (H:LOTS) Detective John Munch is one of the most interesting on primetime TV, maybe that's why he's still playing him after 7 seasons on H:LOTS and seven season on Law & Order: Special

I'm not sure when I first noticed Richard Belzer, but over the past few years I've almost become obsessed with his work, not only as an actor but as a stand up comic and as a person who cares about what's going on in the world around him. I'm not just impressed by his ability to play a wisecracking sex crime detective who says what everyone else is thinking, or his ability to poke fun at himself and everything and everyone else, but also his true caring for people and for situations, as exemplified by his being a board member of the Creative Coalition.

My one disappontment is that his character has been underused of late by writers of Law & Order: SVU

  • Great and funny actor.

Richard Belzer is one of the greatest actors ever, and watching him on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, that\'s one of my favorite shows. I love his sarcasm and paranoia on SVU, and makes the show very exciting to watch. I also like that he brought his character John Munch from Homicide, and continued it over to Law and Order. The best part about Belzer\'s acting is how much he actually seems like a paranoid and very angry but soft cop. Everyone should try to catch episodes of Law and Order and see Richard Belzer\'s great acting as SVU detective John Munch.
  • Very talented and gifted

I have loved Richard Belzer since Homicide

And glad that he has continued his roles

Love John Munch a lot as he is the comic relief

His Munch has the same thing that I have

And we don't either like or trust to feds

Glad that he has been on six different series

    Playing the same character

Not just as a comic relief type of character

But also a much beloved character I might add

Way to go Richard or Munch!!
  • Not many would find him attractive, but he is, and I do. What an incredible actor.

This cynics witty dark humor drew me into the Law and Order genre. He is quite a fine actor and as John Munch, he is someone I can identify with, as my sense of humor can be dark at times. He is, in my opinion, a very underused actor. He would do wonderfully in his own movie. But don't take him away from SVU fans yet!
