Richard Roundtree was born on July 9, 1942, in New Rochelle, New York. He was an alumnus of New Rochelle High School and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Roundtree has been an active occupational actor since 1970. Before being an actor, he was a model and a football player. Richard Roundtree, best known for his leading role in a popular 1971 action film Shaft, played Detective John Shaft. In 1977, he played the role of a slave in Roots, a television series. Between 1989 and 1991, he played Dr. Daniel Reubens in Generations. In 1993, Roundtree underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with male breast cancer. In 1995, he appeared in David Fincher's movie, Seven. He has also guest starred as an unethical private detective in the TV series, Desperate Housewives. Richard Roundtree's voice was used for the leading character in Akuji the Heartless, a hit PlayStation game. In a 2008 movie appearance in Speed Racer, he played a racer-turned-commentator.
