Before becoming an actor, Robert Phillips had already had several interesting careers: he was a swimming and self-defense instructor in the Marine Corps, a Los Angeles policeman, a personal bodyguard for Governor Adlai Stevenson and an NFL football player for both the Washington Redskins and the Chicago Bears.
Phillips also took part in some undercover police work. His exploits as a lieutenant with the Los Angeles Police Department became the basis for the television show Tightrope, which starred Mike Connors.
Phillips wrote a book entitled Sixty-One Ways to End an Argument, which reportedly "basically explained how to tear someone apart with your bare hands".
