    • Before becoming an actor, Robert Phillips had already had several interesting careers: he was a swimming and self-defense instructor in the Marine Corps, a Los Angeles policeman, a personal bodyguard for Governor Adlai Stevenson and an NFL football player for both the Washington Redskins and the Chicago Bears.
    • Phillips also took part in some undercover police work. His exploits as a lieutenant with the Los Angeles Police Department became the basis for the television show Tightrope, which starred Mike Connors.
    • Phillips wrote a book entitled Sixty-One Ways to End an Argument, which reportedly "basically explained how to tear someone apart with your bare hands".
