Rodney Rowland: A lot of television shows are made so that people can turn their sets on, walk away and get a glass of milk or talk on the telephone for five minutes, and then come back in and know exactly what is going on. Space: Above and Beyond is not one of those types of shows. It's made like a feature film. You've got to sit and watch the little things that add up and make it all interesting. Sometimes, I wish it was simpler because then perhaps more people would watch it, but it is what it is.
Rodney Rowland: (On filming the Space: Above and Beyond episode "Who Monitors the Birds".) It was ten days. It was thirty degree weather - all night - and I had to be soaked down with water. There'd be frost on the ground, and I'm running around all night avoiding bomb after bomb. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, physically and psychologically. I was freezing to the bone. I had incredible asthma.
Rodney: Once I started getting work in commercials I thought I was on the road to fame and fortune. Little did I know that it would take ten years of going to acting classes three times a week and doing tons of small plays in New York before I got my big break.
Rodney: I think the two types of characters I play best are those who are a bit dangerous and crazy, and ones who are innocent.
Rodney Rowland: (About his bad first audition for Space: Above and Beyond.) Three friends were in a big auto accident the day before, and one died and the others were almost paralyzed. Then, I came down with a really bad case of strep throat and a fever that was just unbelievable. It's probably the sickest I've ever been. I only had 20 percent of my voice. The producers weren't buying it, they were saying, 'Why hasn't he done a good reading?'
Rodney: If I wasn't an actor I think I'd be ... a police officer, a detective ... something like that. I'm not a nine to five guy. I need something with a bit of an adrenaline rush, a little risk.
Rodney: My favourite vacation getaway spot? Well, I could combine my sport, my hobbies and my ways of relaxing all into one. It's definitely a surf vacation to some beautiful tropical island; Barbados, Hawaii, Bali, Tahiti. I'm not much for sitting around, I have to be active.
Rodney: I started acting because I'd never loved something ... like.. I did it and something opened up inside me. I knew it was right. It was incredible. I mean, they say 'the acting bug'; well, it bit me ... it bit me, grabbed me, and that was it. It was all I thought about to this day. I love it. I love what I do. I'm a very fortunate man.
Rodney: My favourite sport, hands down, is surfing. The only sport I follow ... and I do it constantly.
