In 2007 Russell assisted the Australian government by appearing in a DVD designed to educate parents on the correct way of raising their children.

While filming the movie 3:10 From Yuma, Russell was temporarily knocked out after falling from his horse, but quickly came to. Executives then insisted he use a stunt double in future.

Together in their home town of Auckland Dean Cochrane and Russell Crowe formed a band called Roman Antix. The two also toured together in a production of The Rocky Horror Show. Then in 1987 they packed up and moved to Australia. In the beginning to earn a living they busked on the streets of Sydney. Russell split his time between writing and recording (with Dean) and auditioning for acting rolls.
They had a large collection of songs and decided to form a full band that would go out and play them TOFOG (30 odd foot of grunts) is the result.
