Sandra almost turned down the role of Leigh Ann Touhy for the 2009 film The Blind Side. She knew the film was intended to be an inspirational story about a wealthy wife/mother who took in an African American teenager, and she was afraid that the character would be too cheesy. However, she had a change of heart when she met the real-life Mrs. Touhy, and she realized that the woman was actually strong-willed, opinionated, and real. At this moment, Sandra believed that the film could be told honestly and realistically. It all ended well, because her performance earned her a Best Actress Academy Award for the first time in 2010.
