Birth Name

Saoirse Ronan

Saoirse (an Irish name that is pronounced Seer-shuh) Ronan was born and raised in Ardattin, County Carlow, Ireland on April 12, 1994. Growing up with an actor father, Ronan had an inclination and interest in acting at an early age. His dad helped her with making audition tapes and even played the role of Briony's older sister Cecilia in her audition tape for Atonement.

It was also through her dad's agent that she landed her first professional acting job, a role on the Irish TV series The Clinic. She then appeared in another local series called Proof before being cast in her first feature film I Could Never Be Your Woman, a romantic-comedy by Amy Heckerling, starring Paul Rudd and Michelle Pfeiffer.

In 2007, she appeared in the movie Atonement opposite Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, and Vanessa Redgrave. Her brilliant performance as Briony, the girl who told a lie which changed the lives of the people around her, already garnered her critical acclaim at an early stage in her acting career.
