Sarah: (on her dress style for red carpet events) I think the hardest thing is to be appropriate and dress age-appropriate. But for me, it's harder because I feel like I'm 22, but I look like I'm 15 or 16. So I have to watch that line, while not looking older than I actually am. For the most part, I just pick out what I like!
Sarah: (on some other actress that she admires) I've looked up to Kate Winslet since I was a little girl. And then for Jennifer Aniston, who I worked with on my second movie [The Object of My Affection], she's just such a positive person, and smart and elegant. At the same time, she's not too classy – where you feel like they're royalty and you can't even touch them. Jennifer is down to earth and normal; that's all I ever want to be.
Sarah: (on her self image) You know, every woman has issues with her body. I'm sure Adriana Lima has something she doesn't like, which is ridiculous! But it's just how women are. It's one of those things where you have to love yourself for who you are; as long as you're healthy, that's all that matters. Girls deal with pressure differently. Some days I'm depressed, and other days I'm completely fine. The only advice I have for young women is to cherish the body you have now; when I was 18, I don't think I did.
Sarah: (on her family and on her parents and her brother being also actors) All actors are dramatic, and growing up in a family full of them even more so! I have been watching Shakespeare since I was born. I loved it really early, and I fell in love with acting because it's the biggest form of dress-ups you can do. It definitely wasn't a normal family growing up, but whose family is normal? I'd like to meet the perfect family.
Sarah: (on shopping) Shopping stresses me out. I'm drawn to expensive things, but I don't want to pay $200 for a shirt. I don't like to spend money.
Sarah: (on her Modern Family co-star Ty Burrell, that plays her dad in the show) I call Ty "my TV dad." He's an amazing, talented person. He's just as funny in real life as he is on Modern Family.
Sarah: (on her relationship with social media) Twitter is awesome to share news with fans, but I would never choose to only have social media and put everything in my life on display. I never look at my personal Facebook page. I made an Instagram account for myself, but I only have one picture on it. I made it because someone was pretending to be me and having conversations with my fans and agreed to go on a date with a guy.
Sarah: (on preferring to be role model rather than a sex symbol) Sex has become so publicized. If you're sexy to begin with, being a sex symbol comes with that, but by putting yourself out there as a sex symbol, you're taking a step backward for women.
Sarah: Don't sacrifice who you are for somebody else. Relationships are about compromise, but you should never compromise yourself for someone else.
Sarah: (on her liking to challenge herself inn the role of Haley in Modern Family and in other roles) I like to challenge myself, and though Haley is always changing, she genuinely stays true to her popular self. I'm always looking to change and grow as both an actor and person
Sarah: (on her wanting to try different character other than Haley, her character in Modern Family) Well, it definitely drives me to want to do something that's different from Haley. I don't want to be pigeonholed into the popular pretty girl who's kind of stupid and vapid.
Sarah: (on the TV series Modern Family) The great thing about our show is we have amazing writers who stay current. Not just with pop culture but with their families. A lot of the stories are taken from the lives of our writers and their friends' lives. They never try to be controversial — especially with Mitch and Cam. They're just trying to be honest and true. I think that it's a wonderful thing that people think we're progressive, but we're just trying to portray real life in the States.
