Shakira: (About her relation with her friend Antonio de la Rúa, son of former Argentine president) I want to be the mother of his children, and for that to happen really soon. I think, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've been with him for nine years. We function as a married couple and we're completely supportive of each other. I want to have children with him and grow old with him, but I don't want to jinx it.
Shakira: (About studying history at UCLA) I needed a break from me. The universe is so broad, I cannot be at the centre of it. So I decided to go to the university and study history for a summer course, just to kind of switch gears, taste the student life. I used to wear a cap and a big backpack, I looked like a boy. I didn't get recognized. Some people looked at me very suspiciously, a few people asked me, but I told them my name was Isabelle. I would go to university over and over again if I could.
Shakira: (Talking to the assembled media at the inauguration ceremony of her six-tonne metal statue in her hometown Barranquilla) Barranquilla is a big breast, that fed and nurtured me as a human being.
Shakira: I want my music to transcend all the barriers. The spirit of conquest is a trait that has survived in human beings from the beginning. I want it for the same reason the Spaniards wanted to come to America. You have to cross the oceans. To be able to sink my Colombian flag in this land, that is a motivation
Shakira: When I think that I started this career so early, my case is not the case of an artist who becomes popular overnight and then has to deal with thousands of photographers screaming my name.
Shakira: Somedays I would look at my reflection and see garbage and I guess I was worried about the size of my breasts for a long time. But now I think I have finally reached an age where I have accepted my self for who I am. And anyway, a big butt is far more important in Latin culture.
Shakira: I don't go out without make up. I'm a woman, you know.
Shakira: I am trying to make my accent so it won't bother anyone, but I am not going to drive myself crazy trying to pretend I am an American girl when I am from Colombia.
Shakira: I don't like the competitive part of soccer. It's a war in short pants. I prefer art.
Shakira: I had a big collection of fried eggs that I painted.
Shakira: The worst mistake of a woman is to go to the kitchen, because then she never gets out of there.
Beyonce: I've always loved her and I've always wanted to work with her and the song fits perfectly. The song basically talks about two women. The same guy is trying to get at both of them but instead of them fighting, they're saying, 'He's a beautiful liar, let's not fight, let's stick together - forget him!' I think it's a great concept. On performing a duet with Shakira.
Shakira: I love reading about history. Sometimes, I feel I was born in the wrong era. There was more creativity in the air when people were still discovering new worlds.
Shakira: You can laugh, but since I was a child I knew that I was going to be a well-known singer/songwriter, that was something I had no doubts about. It was almost like a prophecy.
Shakira: The cobra is deadly but mongoose can overcome it. We all have possibillity to defeat prejudiced and resentment in our lives. Fear is the thing that makes us attack, that makes us strike. We must overcome it. We must.
Shakira: I have learned that I am an adult already. And to grow with something is sometimes painful. And its great; I don't say it's a bad thing-but many things change, and many more responsibilities come, and you have more closure in your life, and more possibilities. It's just that it's not as pink as before, but its more interesting.
Shakira: I'm lucky to have family around me. Otherwise, I'll be taking the risk of falling in love with myself. But there are always people close to me who I trust, who will scold me and pull my ears if I need it. Fame isolates people from reality. That happens to many artists, and I don't want it to happen to me.
Shakira: I think my dad is the only Arabic descendent who is an unsuccessful businessman.
Shakira: I expect my beloved to be kind, generous, I expect him not to lie so I can look him straight in the eyes, and I expect him to fall in love with me ten times a day.
Shakira: I admire a person who, for the love of art, is able to take off their clothes in front of a camera. But I'm not capable, I'm too cowardly for that.
Shakira: My mouth is my biggest source of pleasure: singing, conversing, eating, and giving kisses to the person who deserves them.
Shakira: Freddy Demann is a man that knows the world of music. And I know that I am in good hands.
Shakira: I'm more afraid of marriage than death.
Shakira: I always believed that women have rights and that there are some women that are intelligent enough to claim those rights. There are some others that are stupid enough not to.
Shakira: I can't wait for the time when curves and a little bellie fat will be sexy again!
Shakira: In this life, to earn your place you have to fight for it.
Shakira: It doesn't bother me to talk about my private life, it doesn't bother me to talk about anything. My life is like a glass of water, transparent.
Shakira: Writing in English was a major challenge. I didn't want other songwriters to write for me. I wanted to preserve the spirit of my songs in Spanish. I am the same Shakira in English as I am in Spanish.
Shakira: I have many writings that I would not like it if they were published.
Shakira: I talked to the company and I told them: I have the impression that this might be my last chance in this company so let me do it my way. I want to see you in six months, ok?
Shakira: My team and I have reunited two elements that coexist with diffiulty: respect and affection, because when they love you they don't respect you and when they respect you they don't love you.
Shakira: They always ask me what is my objective, but I don't want to share it, because it can be misunderstood.
Shakira: I'm always trying to escape from the pressure of expectation.
Shakira: Sometimes, I ask myself how any other singer could substitute the inspiration of god in their songs.
Shakira: In five minutes, your life will change dramatically.
Shakira: You have to do everything you can to make your butt stand out. It's almost a requirement. But for me, I think I have enough to sit on, so it's fine. I like it as it is. But it's also a bad thing, because I have to work to keep it hard.
Shakira: You're a song written by the hands of God.
Shakira: Writing songs has a therapeutic effect, and it either kills off love or wins the heart of the lover.
Shakira: My songs are the reflection of how I think and how I feel in that moment. But I'm conscious of the fact that artists have a responsibility before the masses and they have to take care with their words.
Shakira: In this life, to earn your place you have to fight for it.
Shakira: I'm Colombian and nothing will change that.
Shakira: I want some day to be able to love with the same intensity and unselfishness that parents love their children with.
Shakira: I prefer an ugly truth to a pretty lie. If someone is telling me the truth that is when I will give my heart.
Shakira: I am trying to make my accent so it won't bother anyone, but I am not going to drive myself crazy trying to pretend I am an American girl when I am from Colombia.
Shakira: I admire Madonna because she always did whatever she felt like doing. She went through some controversial periods when people rejected her, but she kept on reinventing herself.
Shakira: For several years I worried a lot about protecting an image, but today I have understood that the image cannot be preconceived.
Shakira: Everyone can know what is in my heart because I find it hard to conceal myself.
Shakira: People think I like to expose my body. But I don't. It's just because the dance moves require it.
Shakira: I remember the first time I saw the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video. I will never forget that day. I just wanted to see Kurt Cobain's face. I had a feeling he was very cute. But, I couldn't see his face. When I finally did see him, he was even cuter than I imagined!
Shakira: Videos come definitely after the music has been created, but I have always felt, and especially today, that videos are vital in the album process. I think that we live in a very visual era and if you make a mistake with a video, those images will accompany the song forever. There is no way to divorce the image from the music once the video has been filmed and exposed.
Shakira: My brain, I believe, is the most beautiful part of my body.
Shakira: The worst frustration for a singer is choosing a career in making music and then not being able to make music because you're always giving interviews.
Shakira: It's not easy to work with me, I recognize that. It's not easy if those people aren't as perfectionistic as I am.
Shakira: I can't hire other people to write songs for me. I have to write them myself.
