(On the "American Gladiators" event Tug-O-War)
Shirley: The contender has the advantage because our pedestal is tilted toward the competitor, and we have to fight to get to the back of the platform. There's a lot of strategy in this game, it's not just strength.
(On why Hang Tough was her least favorite "American Gladiators" event)
Shirley: I was always preoccupied with trying to keep my uniform from sliding up and exposing me while swinging on the rings! On one show my chest was exposed and they didn't catch it in the editing and it aired on TV and everyone saw it! I was very embarrassed and I don't think I ever did as well on the rings again!
Shirley: Most contenders call me 'Mom.' I'm the nurturing one on the show. Sometimes I give them strategies to win against me. It makes it more amusing to me.
(On trying out for "American Gladiators")
Shirley: I thought it would be tough and it wasn't!
(On appearing on Gladiators 2000)
Shirley: That day was a major highlight for me as a Gladiator and a mother.
Shirley: Why do you want to be average? Do you really want a rainbow that's only one color?
(Telling her most prized possession)
Shirley: My happiness, because a lot of people go through their life never finding it.
