Blessed with the warmest falsetto in all of pop, Smokey Robinson proved you didn't have to scream to be soulful. One of the principal architects of the mythical Motown sound, he wrote and produced dozens of hits for Mary Wells, the Marvelettes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and the…more

Trivia and Quotes

  • A music great.

By all means I have to say that Smokey Robinson is one of the most distinct voices in Motown memory. From what I have seen, he has shown that he is not only a good singer, but also a good songwriter. Most of his songs involve very good lyrics with the right organization of melodies and harmony. The thing that most people forget is the fact that he has written for big music groups such as the Temptations. Overall, I must say that he is one of the most well-known music artists of Motown. I think he is still really good. Thank you.moreless

    (A Review)

    By Larry Buford

A new release, “Food For The Spiritâ€ - the much anticipated Christian Music CD by legendary singer/songwriter Smokey Robinson - is a natural, seamless segue (not departure) from the songs the artist is most known for. Songs like “Tracks Of My Tearsâ€, “Ooo Baby, Babyâ€, “I Second That Emotionâ€, and many others exude a certain, other-worldly spirituality made popular during those turbulent times when our culture needed a lift out of the doldrums of hopelessness and despair. And just as Mr. Robinson made love believable in the temporal sense, he makes it even more believable in the spiritual, firmly standing on his Christian faith.

Throughout his career which spans over 40 years, Robinson gave hints of his spiritual direction with songs like “No Wonder Loves A Wonder, and “Just My Soul Responding. I remember reading somewhere that Aretha Franklin’s father, the late Reverend C.L. Franklin once asked the then lead singer of the famous Motown group, The Miracles, to pen a gospel song. Today, Robinson has declared his faith beyond a shadow of doubt musically.

The first cut on the nine-track CD, “Jesus Told Me To Love You, sets the tone with a strong, well-balanced music arrangement that allows Robinson to shine forth in a refreshingly energetic statement of conviction. All of the tracks are strong; each offering the Good News as he sings about different challenges in life particularly on “Gang Bangin’. My picks for the moment are “He Can Fix Anything, and “I Have Prayed On It. Robinson is known for adding vocal “goodies in his phrasing so that each time you listen to a particular song, you may pick up on something you missed before.

Backed by a fine assembly of singers, including friend and former lead singer of the Temptations, Louis Price, and Oren Waters (of the popular family of singers/musicians, The Waters), this CD promises the attention of Robinson’s legions of fans, and the curiosity of a new generation.

Not only is this recording released on Robinson’s own “Robsoâ€ record label â€" inside there is a surprise insert announcing the rollout of his own food line, Soul in the Bowl Foods, featuring “Soul in the Bowlâ€ Gumbo!

Hearing this new CD is like welcoming home a family member or close friend who’s been away. Welcome home William “Smokey Robinson!
