Do you think that movie adaptations for Stephen King's works are good? I got to say that I kind of like the Shining, though it is not like the novel, it was cool with Jack getting crazy and everything, and I enjoyed Misery because it was potrayed so well, and it was kind of cool with Paul being torture... but the one that gets my nerves to crack is IT, I have never seen such a scary movie, even now when horror movies have more visual effects and everything, I do not dare to see IT again because it scares me to hell! It scared me as a kid, and it will scare me forever (though I really hope not), IT is so creepy and terrible in that movie, I will have to say that it is the best movie adaptation of IT, but what do you guys think?

IMHO most of the adaptations are poor. Generally SK spends a long time in each book introducing you to all of the characters. By the time things start happening to them, you really care about them and understand their emotions when faced with all kinds of horrors. You also build far more horrific images in your mind than even the best FX can produce.
Take Misery as an example, reading the book, (in my head) I'm lying strapped to the bed and can feel the axe swinging against the leg of the bed. I don't know what it is, and this mad woman is talking about slaves. When the threat becomes clear, and is then realised, I'm firstly terrified and then in agony. The film didn't come close. The end of IT on screen was comical - not at all frightening.
As for The Shining, I thought it was really badly cast - none of the characters were anything like SK had written them and Jack Nicholson's over acting ruined a great story for me. (I know I'm going to get loads of abuse for that last comment, but what the hey)

Most of the adaptations are really poor. There just isn't enough money on a tv budget to make the shows like the book. Take IT, loved the book, loved most of it until the end, the spider at the end ruined it for me. The Stand was the same. It was a good try, for such a large book, and like IT I loved it, until "The Hand of God" scene and it was terrible just bad CGI(and if you listen to the commentary on the Stand they weren't impressed with it either). His books are great, the characters are given life, you get to know them and love them and hate them. It is just so hard to put that on the screen.

Now for movies, IMO the more serious books make better movies. The Green Mile and the Shawshank Redemption, both were great movies very similar to the book. DreamCatcher was good, until the ending then changed it up at the end. Bigger budgets make better movies.

1408 was pretty good, for being from a short story and I am looking forward to the Mist and the Cell, so I guess that with better technology, maybe better movies.

yeah most of the movie adaptations aren't that good. it's really best to just read the book. it's just w/ movies we get to see how it comes to life. i like pet sematary's version of the movie. i've seen 1408 & i love it but i'm kinda disappointed w/ the mist's ending. really the book's ending is better. i think some of them are great like the green mile, misery & the shawshank redemption. the others are ok like carrie, cujo, firestarter. as for the rest, maybe it's a bit disappointing but i still would want to see them.
