my knowledge of steve whitmire is not of a professional nature, but a personal one. no, we were not close friends, but we did spend the better part of the 1975 school year at berkmar high in mr. huffs mens chorus. i think the reason i remember him so well is because he treated me like a friend. you see, being popular was never a problem for me in high school. i wasn\'t, so it wasn\'t a problem. to be honest, i wasn\'t very good in chorus either, but i could sing tenor, so i was in by default. steve was popular and talented, but he had a modesty about him that made you feel at ease to talk to him.
in our choral performance that year, among other songs, we did \" if i were a wealthy man. \" from fiddler on the roof.mr. huff was a perfectionist! we practiced and practiced until it was down to a science.in the concert, the song went off without a hitch. the harmonies were perfect, and the timing was impecable. almost.the last word in the song was \"man\". i was full half second ahead of everyone else. i was devestated. i walked off the stage and was in tears headed out when steve came up behind me.he asked me what was the matter like he didn\'t know.i said i ruined it for everyone. he just smiled and said \" don\'t worry about.they\'ll forget all about it... in ten or twenty years\"
this all has nothing to do with muppets, or movies, or fame. this is about a big guy who never made me feel small.
