Stuart Margolin

1/31/1940 , Davenport, Iowa

Birth Name

Stuart Margolin is best known for his two-time Emmy award-winning role of Evelyn "Angel" Martin on The Rockford Files. Margolin has a long career as an actor, writer and director and has been recognized for all of the facets of his career.

As a character actor, Margolin appeared in several films and TV series in the 1960s and 1970s, including Kelly's Heroes and Nichols, where he got to work with and know James Garner. Later, when the role of "Angel" was being cast on The Rockford Files, Garner came to his friend for the part. Despite the producers' initial reluctance, Garner persuaded them to cast Margolin. Once they saw the positive audience reaction to the character, they were glad they had. Margolin appeared in 36 episodes of the show, and won two Emmy awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Since the 1970s, Margolin has directed several TV episodes, helming episodes of M.A.S.H., The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Quantum Leap and Northern Exposure. He also directed two of the 1990s Rockford reunion movies. In 1987, he was nominated for another Emmy, this time for directing an episode of The Tracey Ullman Show. He has won one (and been nominated for two other) Directors Guild of America Awards.

Margolin lives with his wife, Pat, in British Columbia, Canada and in recent years has appeared in and directed episodes for several Canadian TV series.
