Susannah is the daughter of the English actress
Polly Adams, the great niece of the actor
Gordon Harker and the sister of
Caroline Harker, also an actress. She trained for an acting career in London at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Susannah was married to the actor
Iain Glen, and they have one son, called
Finlay, but Susannah and Iain separated and filed for divorce in 2004.

Susannah's family has a long theatrical tradition. Her great-great-grandfather Joseph Harker (1856-1927) was a well-known scene painter in the London theatre and was himself the son of an actor called William Pierpoint Harker. Joseph was a close friend and colleague at the Lyceum Theatre of the writer Bram Stoker, who is said to have named the hero of Dracula (Jonathan Harker) after his friend Joseph. One of Joseph's sons was the character actor Gordon Harker (1885-1967).
