In college, Ted was the lead singer and keyboard player in a punk rock band named Mrs Magrooder.
Ted is of English and Welsh descent.
In 2004, Ted wrote a one-act play based on his experiences on Queer Eye, which was performed at the Victory Gardens Theatre in Chicago.
Ted was raised in a religious Christian, conservative household, but now describes himself as an atheist and very liberal.
Ted is an active member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and the Human Rights Campaign.
In 2004, Ted's alma mater, Purdue University, awarded Ted as one of their Distinguished Alumni.
Ted has two cats, Maggie and Big Daddy, named after characters from his partner's favorite movie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
Ted shares his life with his longterm partner (they have been together since 1993), Barry Rice (a journalism professor-turned-interior decorator). They are registered Domestic Partners and regard themselves as married.
In October 2005 Ted published a cookbook, The Food You Want To Eat.
