The Monkees were not the greatest band in the world, but with songs written by some of the greatest hit makers of the 1960s, they did alright. As a TV show, The Monkees was similar, not the best thing on the air but the shows were good enough for who they were for, kids, and it became a sudden if brief hit.
The shows as I recall them were entertaining and rarely featured anything very controversial. Like a lot of the lighter entertainment of that era, The Monkees is something you can put your kids down in front of and not have to worry about a lot of scary adult themes popping up. The jokes are silly, the music is light and there is always a lot of running around. Many of the musical scenes are a lot like today's music videos, only made 15 years before anyone ever thought of MTV.
As a kid who watched the show in syndication some 10 years after it disappeared from first run television, I really enjoyed this. As an adult, I am less entranced by the action but can still appreciate some of the music. I feel like I can recommend this show for what it is, a silly, fun comedy for kids right out of the 1960s.
