Vittorio Gassman

Gassman won the David di Donatello award nine times during his career: - in 1960, for best actor, ex aequo with Alberto Sordi, for his performance in La grande guerra; - in 1963, for best actor, for his performance in Il sorpasso; - in 1965, for best actor, ex aequo with Marcello Mastroianni, for his performance in La congiuntura; - in 1967, for best actor, ex aequo with Ugo Tognazzi, for his performance in Il Tigre; - in 1975, for best actor, for his performance in Profumo di donna; - in 1979, for best actor, for his performance in Caro papà; - in 1987, for best actor, for his performance in La famiglia; - in 1991, Gassman won a special David; - in 1996 he received a David di Donatello as special award for his acting career, together with actress Gina Lollobrigida.

In 1975, Gassman won the award for best actor at Cannes Festival for his performance in Profumo di donna (1974).

Gassman was nicknamed "Il Mattatore": the nickname belongs to a daily TV show he created and conducted in 1957. The success was so big that it became soon a movie, named "Il Mattatore".
