Biography:

Burly character actor equally adept at playing comic or dramatic roles, Bendix got into acting in the 1930's after the Great Depression killed his fledgling grocery business. He first got noticed in 1942 when he played a gangster who beats up Alan Ladd in The Glass Key. His most popular and best remembered screen role came two years later as a doomed sailor in Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat. Bendix, like a few others in Hollywood, made the transition to television in the 1950's playing the title character in the second TV incarnation of the sitcom The Life of Riley.
