In 2007, the producers of ABC's soap opera "One Life to Live" decided to downgrade Phil down to recurring status (due to a disagreement in contract), but Phil decided not to continue playing the role of Asa Buchanan. His character's departure was never explained (he just disappeared), which is ironic because Phil played the role for 28 years.
