This episode was originally planned as the second part of a 2-part crossover story with The X Files. In that show's 2nd season episode
Red Museum, Mulder and Scully investigate a case of cows apparently being injected with alien DNA. The plan was for David Duchovny to appear in this episode of PF when it looked like there had been another occurrence of the cows-alien DNA case in Rome. However, CBS execs nixed the idea because X Files aired on FOX and Kelley had to rewrite the script. During the episode, Carter still mentions the events of The X Files, with Sam Anderson's FBI agent arriving to investigate, instead of Mulder. X Files creator Chris Carter comments that "I like to think the crossover still happened, it's just that our characters didn't appear." (edit)
