When Tessa Alvarado learns of her father's death in California in a fall from his horse, she abandons her life in Spain and returns to her birthplace. She quickly learns all is not well. Her father's servant, Carlos, has turned to robbery and been arrested, the house is in disrepair and in arrears on taxes and a military dictator has set himself up as the law. To oppose the dictator, Montoya, she is forced to take a new identity: that of the Queen of Swords!

Grisham: Guess I was a little more than you expected.
(Tessa swings her sword in between his legs.)
Tessa: You could be a litte less.
Grisham: Be good to me.
(She knocks him out) (edit) Tessa: That was murder.
Montoya: There is a difference, senorita, between execution and murder. It is called the law. Here, I am the law. (edit) Marta: So, this is the new world? Savage country. (edit) Tessa: It's time to go home. (edit) Grisham: A woman all alone... you need protecting.
Tessa: I quite agree. I'll get a dog. (edit)
