"This is the true story of seven strangers picked to live in a house and have their lives taped. Find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real. The Real World..."

How many times have we heard those words? The Real World was the first reality show on tv, premiering in 1992. It is still on the air, about to air it's 21st season, set in Brooklyn. When The Real World was created, it created a new genre of television that years later would be copied by other networks and become almost an obsession around the world. MTV originally wanted to make a soap opera, but the costs were too high, so they thought "what if we could get rid of writers, and scripts, and sets?". That resulted on the first Real World, set in NY neighborhood of SoHo, Manhattan, where 7 people that had never met before had to live in a house together for some time.

As the years went by, The Real World slowly gained its shape and space. New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Miami, Boston, Seattle, Hawaii, New Orleans, Chicago, Las Vegas, Paris, San Diego, Philadelphia, Austin, Key West, Denver, Sydney and now Hollywood...all these locations have hosted the show. Auditions to be a cast member today attract hundreds of thousands of people in hopes to be one of the strangers in the house. Living rent-free for 6 months in a very hip house with very interesting (and often annoying) roommates, and being on an internationally broadcast tv show is quite attractive to people in their late teens/early 20s.

How much of the show is actually true we'll never know. A lot of what we see on tv is edited to make it look like it all happened in a certain timeline. All the houses have cameras everywhere, and there's a clause in the contract of each housemate that says they're not allowed to go places where the cameras are not allowed in. And all the sounds are taped in a separate way, so, according to Melissa from New Orleans, a lot of times when they're talking and you can only see the back of their heads, the words you hear might not be the words they actually said at the time. Edited or not, none of the scenes aired on the show are acted. They all happened, without scripts.

Each cast member receives around $250 per week, plus their house expenses paid (not including food. That's why every time a parent comes over, they cook). Anything else they want, they have to pay for. Plus, they don't get to take any of all the cool stuff you see in the house.

  'Real World D.C.': MTV makes it official By: Jeff Dufour and Kiki Ryan Washington Examiner 06/10/09 1:14 PM EDT After weeks of speculation, MTV made it official this afternoon: "The Real World" is filming its 23rd season in Washington this summer. The show will premiere in 2010, after the current season of "Real World: Cancun" fades into memory. Eight young adults will move into a house at 20th and S streets near Dupont Circle, which is currently under construction, as it is transformed into a 24-hour TV set. In recent days, photos of the construction have been posted on several local blogs and Web sites. "The charged atmosphere of Washington D.C., the center of our country's social and political change, will provide an electric setting for this next season of 'The Real World,'" said Tony DiSanto , MTV's president of programming. "We are thrilled to be filming our franchise in the heart of where history is being made ... it adds a whole new dimension to the great characters and drama our viewers expect and love from 'The Real World.'"   MTV chooses Cancun as setting for 22nd cycle of series By James Hibberd Jan 26, 2009, 01:00 AM ET And the location for the next season of "The Real World" is ... Cancun. The Mexico vacation destination will serve as the setting for the MTV show's 22nd cycle. There, the housemates will work with spring break resource site StudentCity.com to serve as guides for visiting college students. "They're going to help give people a safe and fun vacation," co-creator Jonathan Murray said. "They also might have to bail somebody out of a Mexican jail, stuff like that." Production has started on the season, which will debut this year. The current season is set in Brooklyn. The recent season premiere was up 18% in the total viewers from last year and continues to rank as one of MTV's top-rated shows. "Cancun is a good one to do after Brooklyn, which was a more gritty environment," Murray said. If the location sounds like it's from a previous installment of the groundbreaking reality series, there's some cause for that. The party spot seems an ideal choice for the show, and after 21 cycles it's surprising Cancun wasn't picked earlier.   Good concept that has been bastardized beyond recognition. hide « show »

  I watched season one faithfully and it was refreshing to see real people outside of their comfort zones. Now it's simply a big game of who can be the most obnoxious, sleazy and cruel. Let's spin the wheel to see who will sleep with who tonight! There isn't anything new to be seen and a lot of repeated scenarios that are clearly set-ups. Just because they haven't got the good sense to be embarrassed by showing themselves in the most unflattering light doesn't mean they shouldn't be embarrassed. I imagine that a lot of their family members are, at least. Do the "real people" get "real" penicillin at the end of the season? I certainly hope so.

  The Real World is one the kind of shows I don't normally watch but the new season seems to be the most interesting yet... hide « show »

  The Real World is basically just about different types of people living under one roof. The newest season, "The Real World: Brooklyn", seems to be the most interesting season yet! I don't know if it's because Katie is transgendered or because one of the girls is passionate about dancing. I kind of like this show now. I just hope people aren't watching it just because someone is gay or transgendered. You can learn a little bit about how those kind of people work. Anyway, I say this show gets better every season. It's decent in a way. The new season is great!

  love the real world. man once you watch it you want to see what happends next.I gvie it about 5 stars beacause it is a great show and you will love it. I like the real world hollywood its has a lot of drama and fights and lots of love parts. The real world hollywood tells about the 7 people that move in want to be famous and they need to get along with all the other roommates. They need to start be comming real. the real world. trust me you will love this show. The real world rocks. The best tv show

  I really enjoy this show. I loved seeing these people interact with each other! It's just so dang entertaining, it's hard not to watch it. The fights and the drama that consume the house is unbelievable. There are some pretty hot girls on the show. The casting producers or whoever sure makes good choices. My favorite seasons have to be Key West, Austin, Denver, Las Vegas and I'm liking Hollywood at the moment. I could pretty much cite an episode to you, but each season has it's high moments where a catastrophe happens and everybody is just SO shocked. I'm not a dedicated viewer every week, but I like to check it out and see if I like the people in the house. I can't believe it's been 20 seasons!

  love the show and being the groundbreaker show in the 1990's but lately the does not have any talkabout the next morning did you see what happen and the did brought diversty for a while but now it fail with the same old situations with a new cast,locale. hide « show »

  Way ahead of it time and how seven strangers deal with living together and getting along with one another is great but it did have great monents over the years but the show went downhill when the producers try to continue with the show with new faces some of are good but latest edition doesn't brought to me any watercooler mentions that people talk about. But the show is great where the roommates deal with the good or bad situations. But there are seasons the show fail to make me watch especially the newest ones. But love the show bring in better cast.
